Department of Editing of Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) under the direction of Tomas Doruška has organized the educational workshop EUROPEAN EDITING MASTERCLASS. The workshop was aimed at training future film editors - 24 students of bachelor and master study programs of film editing departments of four prestigious European Art Universities:

  • Lodz Film School / Szkoła Filmowa w Łodzi, Poland
  • (FAMU) Filmová a televizní fakulta Akademie múzických umění, Czech Republic
  • (VŠMU) Vysoká škola múzických umení v Bratislave, Slovakia
  • (RITCS) Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound, Belgium

Students from the different schools were divided into mixed groups. The lecturers each received a group of students, but one without their own students. An assignment is formulated, the film material is then distributed, viewed and discussed. The students got to work under the guidance of the tutors for adjustment and feedback. Editing students come with a variety of possible results, starting from the same filmed raw material.

Students were able to push their boundaries of creative editing. This happened as they were challenged when viewing intermediate results of other peers. The idea is that through the regular peer-to-peer reviews, they had to go further in trying different approaches withing the documentary style.

The lecturers were prominent figures in European editing, including the renowned Jarosław Kamiński (Lodz Film School), rector Milenia Fiedler (Lodz Film School), FAMU teachers Ivo Trajkov and Tomáš Doruška, as well as Maroš Šlapeta and Roman Kelemen from VŠMU, Lai Kin (RITCS), and dean Patrick Geeraerts (RITCS).

The final versions of the student works were presented in Projection room at FAMU on 19 January 2024. The students gained insight into the different creative processes of the others.

The virtual component after the workshop consisted of an online group discussion about the edited works during the physical working week. Students could continue working on their task at their own pace, in order to show an improved version to the lectors and their peers.

The event took place with financial support from the European Union.
