Tsai Ming-liang, a unique director and a luminary of Taiwanese cinema, will visited Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague from 4 to 8 November 2024. Tsai Ming-liang is a key proponent of slow cinema, which works with little or no narrative, emphasising the connection between space and the flow of time. FAMU students and teachers had an opportunity to meet the director and get to know his work and creative method in-depth at screenings, masterclasses, discussions and one-on-one consultations.
Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang was awarded an AMU Gold Medal at Kino Ponrepo on 4 November 2024 in recognition for his contribution to global cinema.
Tsai Ming-liang’s unique meditative style spans approaches ranging from classic cinema to specific video art installations. Tsai is one of those filmmakers who are utterly unique and authorial and whose films embody their personal philosophy, creating intimate meditative space while appealing to broad audiences of the world’s largest film festivals.
Tsai Ming-liang confronted his authorial approach with student projects, accompanied by his actor and producer. Tsai Ming-liang films VR works and creates gallery installations, making him a highly original author with a scope unmatched by anyone on the Czech scene. As part of a mentoring programme, he visited the Rudolfinum Gallery, the Antony Gromley / Pavla Melková exhibition with MA students and then discussed the relationship between art and film.
Teachers had an opportunity to compare their own teaching approaches with this singular artist and watch their MA students respond to the feedback he gave on their artistic work.
Tsai Ming-liang’s visit was supported financially by the Ministry of Culture Taiwan) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague (TECO).
AMU, Mentoring programme Tsai Ming-liang, reg. nr.: 0411000010 is implemented with the financial participation of the European Union through the National Recovery Plan and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
