Mentoring Programme

Danish cinematographer and photographer Manuel Alberto Claro, a frequent collaborator of Lars von Trier, has lectured at FAMU from 3 to 5 April 2024. The film Melancholia (directed by Lars von Trier, cinematography by Manuel Alberto Claro, ACC DFF) has been screened on 3 April 2024 and a masterclass followed in the form of a moderated discussion with the cinematographer on the topic of Camera Motion and Handheld Shots, moderated by Vidu Gunaratna. The programme continued on 4 and 5 April in the form of intensive mentoring sessions dedicated to the students of the Department of Cinematography.

About lector:

Manuel Alberto Claro (*1970) is a Danish cameraman and photographer born in Chile. Having studied photography in Milan, he worked as an assistant photographer in Europe and the USA. His cinematographer career began in 1997 when he enrolled as a student at Den Danske Filmskole from which he graduated in 2001. As a cinematographer, Manuel Claro has filmed some 20 full-length films including several international award-winning ones. He is known for his frequent collaborations with Lars von Trier, having contributed to films such as Melancholia, Nymphomaniac, and The House that Jack Built. He is an active member of the Danish Association of Cinematographers (DFF) and an honorary member of the Chilean Society of Cinematographers (ACC).
