Mentoring Programme

"When you just observe, when you just feel what you see, when you feel the colour, feel the smell of everything, when you are just present, everything will just accumulate. Cinema is all about observation. You have to observe with your eyes, with your ears. The capacity of improvising, which comes from disposition to observe and listen, will always be there and will be the most acute, the most powerful, when you have a good plan. Why are we making cinema as an imitation, when we can make it as an authentic representation."

Carlos Reygadas' Masterclass, October 30, 2020

The Mentoring Programme supports students in confronting their artistic work with an international professional environment. It enables them to gain professional experience, develop international networks, and stay connected with current developments in cinema and audiovisual culture. As part of the programme, the faculty regularly hosts prominent figures of world cinema from various film professions, offering students a unique opportunity for direct exchange with leading professionals and hands-on industry experience. The long-term aim of the programme is to become a natural part of the study curricula.

The Mentoring Programme connects students with filmmakers and artists from both international and Czech environments and offers various opportunities for sharing experience in both theoretical and practical contexts. The most common forms of mentoring include lectures, masterclasses, screenings, individual consultations on artistic projects, and workshops. The programme may also include internships, participation in film productions, or shadowing professionals from the film industry.

FAMU MENTORING BOARD

The Mentoring Board serves as an advisory body to the Dean and is composed of academic staff and students. The Board helps define goals within the faculty’s strategic framework in the areas of internationalisation and mentoring, collects individual proposals, evaluates applications, and contributes to the development and overall concept of the Mentoring Programme. The aim is for decisions regarding the programme to be made collectively, enabling better communication, greater systematisation, and more effective financial planning, while also encouraging discussion about the creation of shared workshops connecting international filmmakers with the faculty’s core teaching staff.

Financing

The Mentoring Program is funded through resources provided by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and through additional grant schemes. The specific terms of support vary depending on the individual programs and projects.

The preparation of a mentoring programme varies depending on its format and scope. Some forms of mentoring require longer organisational preparation, particularly in the case of international guests or practical internships on film productions in the Czech Republic or abroad. It is therefore important to allow sufficient lead time when submitting proposals and planning implementation. Depending on the type of mentoring activity, the preparation and organisation process may take approximately 3 to 10 months. The program is open exclusively to students enrolled in accredited degree programs taught in Czech or English who, at the time of application, are full-time students in the second or higher year of a bachelor’s program, any year of a master’s program or doctoral program, or students awaiting their final state examination.
