ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BEST FAMU DIPLOMA/DISSERTATION THESIS AWARD 2025

The award for the best qualifying thesis went to Jules Roux for his thesis entitled Cringe! Discomfort and Embarrassment in the Cinema of Ruben Östlund. The committee praised the author's ability to clearly define the theoretical concept of the "cringe" effect, to justify his selection of three films for analysis, and to demonstrate with great confidence and skill his interpretation of the techniques Ruben Östlund uses to make viewers feel uncomfortable. Another positive aspect of the work is the author's careful use of sources, including his own interview with Östlund himself.

The jury awarded special recognition to Matěj Hložánek for his work Metaphor of Economic Growth in Videogame Design. The work impressed with its logical structure, clear introduction to the theory of metaphors, and its inspiring application to video game storytelling, which is thus treated with the same seriousness as other art forms. The author skillfully incorporates media-specific aspects of video games (the role of space and visuality, the contribution of the player, etc.) into his analysis. The text, which represents a valuable contribution to the still-evolving discipline of game studies, exemplarily fulfilled the requirements for scientific work and made use of a wide range of specialist literature.

The panel involving Martin Šrajer (film scholar and critic, a Film a doba and Filmový přehled editor) and Jakub Korda (Vice-Dean of FAMU for Science and Research) would also like to thank the authors of the other nominated works (in alphabetical order): 

Ema Adamove (KST): Reconstruction of Narrative in Film Restoration.
This inspiring and carefully written work incorporates the editor's perspective in considering the process of film restoration, taking into account the concept of "original" in terms of both the original film and the original author's intention.

Tei Lee (KM): Embracing and Sculpting the Visual Style of Darius Khondji.
This work demonstrates great mastery in explaining the technical and aesthetic aspects of cinematography using the example of a significant filmmaker.

Jakub Ondráček (KDT): Transcribing the author's perspective into political portraits in documentary film.
The author of this work deserves recognition for the robustness of his qualitative research, which consisted of conducting interviews with the authors of the twelve films he analyzed. His work will certainly serve him well in his own creative endeavors and is a good example of so-called "practice-based research."
