The space of any movie is not limited by the frame of image.  In fact, it extends far beyond the screen, and the medium giving the life to this hidden world is primarily the sound. The sound is tapping into human imagination, opening the inner potential of images. Thus the sound provokes sort of a revelation of content behind the picture, brings the characters to life, transforms the mere representation into authentic experience.

Film sound is the exciting area of creativity oscillating between use of technology as much as sensitivities implied within audio-visual language.

The aim of the training program is to equip students with the basic knowledge needed in creation of a soundtrack of a film. Students will be navigated trough the areas of acoustics, sound recording and sound post-production as well as through theories related to film language and aesthetics, historical context from the perspective of sound.

Students will be gathering all important communication and practical technical skills under supervision of skilled artists active in the film industry. All students will be participating on the creation of a short movie, going through the collaborative process thus touching all stages of creative work involved in completing a soundtrack for cinema.

For whom the course is intended: People interested to step into film sound practices, any filmmakers wishing to gather theoretical and technical skills in the sound recording and  sound postproduction, or just anybody wishing to know more about creative potential of sound in audiovisual media

The one-year intensive course Introduction to film sound is designed as a wide encompassing training in all the processes of production and postproduction from the standpoint of a sound designer. The most important learning outcome is the ability to understand fundamental building principles of the film soundtrack including:

  • sound /location recording
  • dialogue editing
  • postproduction techniques
  • sound design

Students at the end of the course will accomplish creation of their own portfolio of the audio-visual works, which is essential for the next steps either for further studying or applying for a job in the film sound industry.

The Creative Outcome in the Introduction to Film Sound Course:

  • specific Location Sound recording exercises
  • editing and Sound Design exercises (creation of multichannel Soundscapes)
  • mixing exercises
  • possibility of creating sound track for directing students’ projects
