ANIMATED FILM

One Year Intensive Course

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is based on the principal aesthetic notion that animated film is a specific genre of dramatic art. Animation is also approached as a specific kinetic form of fine art. During the course students learn about various techniques and technologies of animated film – both hand-made and digital (computerized). They are instructed about general animation concepts as well as specific topics like storyboarding or the structure of animation puppets, which they master as part of simple hands-on exercises. Students’ artistic sensibilities are refined throughout the course in the drawing lessons. Part of the course is also basic overview of the history of animated film, both in the Czech and global perspective, and theoretical principles of animated film. The course is scheduled for two semesters.

 

GRADUATE PROFILE

Animated Film course graduates master the various techniques and technologies of animation, both hand-made and computerized. They improve their artistic expression. They can create a storyboard. They master the fundamental principles and concepts of animation, which they get to test in simple animation exercises. They are knowledgeable in animated film theory. They know an overview of the history of animated film, both Czech and global. They are conversant with the current animated film and can navigate through this field. Having graduated, they can work as independent artists or further their career in creative professions as assistants and artists in professional animation environments.

Certification:

All students will receive a transcript of completed courses in accordance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). These credits are accepted by and transferable to universities, academies and advanced institutions of higher learning throughout the world. 
All students who successfully fulfill the requirements of their study plan will receive a Certificate from FAMU International. 

Please note that acceptance into the FAMU International one year Academy Preparation Program does not guarantee admission into further studies at FAMU, however the portfolio of main works completed within the course provides application material expected for most advanced studies of the discipline.

TO APPLY, THE PROSPECTIVE STUDENT NEEDS TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS AND WORKS:

1. APPLICATION FORM 

Download the application form, complete it and e-sign it.
Name the form following the pattern “Your_full_name_APP_2025_form” and upload it. Alternatively, you can print it and fill it in by hand, then scan it, name it appropriately and upload it. The admission to each specialization is equally competitive. Please choose your specialization based on your preference.

2. CV 

Brief description of the applicant’s academic and artistic records. Please also state level of English you speak. Name it “Your_full_name_APP_2025_CV” and upload it.

3. ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPTS 

From all previously attended institutions. (Secondary school transcripts are not necessary for those with higher levels of education.) Name it “Your_full_name_APP_2025_transcript” and upload it.

4. ARTISTIC SAMPLE 

Please submit the following: 

For Animated Film: 
a. an analysis of any animated film (1 – 2 pages) Upload as 1 pdf file named “Your_full_name_APP_2025_analysis” 

b. an original theme for own animated film (1 text page), it is possible but not necessary to submit a visual idea for the animated film (1 page). Upload as 1 pdf file named “Your_full_name_APP_2025_theme” 

c. own artwork (20 items) in .png format 1500px minimum. All images must be uploaded as one .zip file and named “Your_full_name_APP_2025_artwork"

5. STATEMENT OF INTENT

A short personal essay on what the applicant expects from their studies as well as what the applicant believes they can contribute to the creative and intellectual environment of FAMU, and the reasons they would like to come and study in Prague. 
Name it “Your_full_name_APP_2025_intent” and upload it.

6. SELF-PORTRAIT 

One minute video self-portrait. Upload on either Vimeo or Youtube in HD (it has to be downloadable), please make a .doc with the link of your self-portrait and name it “Your_full_name_APP_2025_selfportrait” and upload it as previous files.

7. APPLICATION FEE

A scanned certificate of having deposited the application fee of EUR 65 (or CZK equivalent) in the account number provided below must be submitted with every application. Name it “Your_full_name_APP_2025_deposit” and upload it.

The deposit must be EUR 65 exactly, regardless of other banking or transfer fees.

Minimum 18 years of age, with completed secondary school education

ACCOMMODATION, HEALTH INSURANCE AND VISA: 

Not provided by FAMU. These are the responsibility of the student. FAMU provides accepted students with an Acceptance letter which serves as one of the required visa application documents.

The production of major Workshop Projects is covered by the tuition fee paid for the program.
