Ideological Space of Childhood in Czechoslovak Cinema: “Other” Children of Karel Kachyňa

The project focuses on selected films and television projects by Karel Kachyna and examines their child and adolescent characters in relation to genre constellations and specific ideological discourse. Through the prism of childhood studies concepts, especially the so-called “double figuration” of childhood in the media – as a bearer of ideology, an object participating in social and cultural institutions, and at the same time as a construction of the imagination of an adult creator (Benzaquén 2001) – it traces the interaction of childhood figures in the given films with socially and historically conditioned images of childhood and adolescence.
