Rams, the new film from the Icelandic writer/director Grímur Hákonarson, has been selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 13 – 24. Un Certain Regard is part of the festival’s official selection. Rams is set in a remote Icelandic farming valley, where two brothers who haven’t spoken in 40 years have to come together in order to save what’s dearest to them – their sheep. The film was shot in the remote valley of Bárdardalur in the north of Iceland this past winter.

Rams is an Icelandic/Danish co-production that has received suppport from both the Icelandic Film Centre and the Danish Film Institute. It was written and directed by Grímur Hákonarson, and produced by Grímar Jónsson for Netop Films. It was co-produced by Ditte Milsted and Jacob Jarek for Profile Pictures. Thor Sigurjonsson was one of the film’s executive producers, and Eva Sigurdardóttir was the line producer. International sales will be handled by New Europe Film Sales. Rams stars Sigurdur Sigurjónsson and Theodór Júlíusson. The film was shot by Sturla Brandth Grovlen and edited by Kristján Lodmfjörd. Atli Örvarsson composed the score.

Hákonarson has worked as a filmmaker for almost two decades. He has written and directed award-winning short films, including Slavek the Shit and Wrestling, and a number of documentaries, including Vardi Goes Europe, A Pure Heart and The Laxá Farmers. Rams is Hákonarson’s second narrative feature. His first, Summerland, was released in 2010.

Rams’ director of photography, Sturla Brandth Grovlen, recently won a Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlin International Film Festival, for the film Victoria, a 140-minute drama shot in a long single take.

The film’s composer, Atli Örvarsson, has made a name for himself in Hollywood, where he has scored the films Vantage Point and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and the TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. He has also collaborated with the composer Hans Zimmer on numerous occasions, providing additional music to films such as The Holiday, The Simpsons Movie and Man of Steel. In Iceland he has scored the TV show The Cliff: Depth of Darkness and the recently released film The Homecoming by Björn Hlynur Haraldsson.
