Distinctive Features of the Subject

The department prepares students for the craft of editing for the full range of audiovisual media (film, video, TV, multimedia) with an emphasis on compositional and creative abilities. Students graduating from this program should be able to work independently as full-fledged creative partners with directors and producers.

Applicants are expected to possess a comprehensive cultural knowledge of film, literature, fine art, drama and music, as well as compositional and imaginative abilities.

Entrance Examination: FIRST round

Based on works submitted.

Works required

  1. Written analysis of a famous significant film with a focus on the means of expression, especially editing composition with regards to dramatic construction and sound composition.

  2. Storyboard consisting of at least 12 and maximum 15 stills. Each photograph substitutes for a shot in a silent film. The storyboard must be intelligible without an explanatory text. The applicant is expected to demonstrate his ability to tell a simple story through images. The composition will be evaluated; therefore the applicant is required to take all the pictures himself. Laboratory processing does not necessarily have to be done by the applicant himself.

  3. A series of photographs (7-10 pieces) in one esthetic style

  4. A short film that the applicant directed and/or edited, or shot as D.O.P.

  5. A work of the applicant’s choice –short story, series of photographs, poem, painting or another short film – anything that the applicant chooses to present himself as a creative person (not necessarily as an experienced filmmaker).

LAYOUT OF THE WORKS TO BE SUBMITTED

  1. Written analysis is to be submitted in six copies. It must contain the applicant's name and address. All written works must be translated into Czech.

  2. The storyboard is to be submitted twice. The photographs should be black-and-white; the required size is 6 x 9 cm. The photographs must be loose; a photo album is not acceptable. Each photograph must contain the applicant's name, and a shot number written on the back (shot 1, 2, 3, etc.). If there is a need to show a substantial change of composition or action within one shot, two photographs might be used and marked accordingly (shot 1a, 1b, etc.)

  3. The series of photographs is to be submitted once, the required size is 9 x 13 cm. Photographs should be loose, and must contain the applicant's name

  4. Films are to be submitted once in VHS format, with applicant's name and information about his participation: e.g. editor, director, etc.

A brief CV and a photography (in passport format) of the applicant is to be attached to the application form.

DEADLINE

The required works shall be sent or brought in person to the address:  KSS (editing department) FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Praha 1, 116 65. Application form shall be sent to the address: Studijni oddeleni, FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Praha 1, 116 65. The deadline for both is November 30.


Based on the works submitted, a commission will choose the applicants to be invited to the second round of the entrance exams.

Entrance Examination: SECONd round

will take place at the editing department of FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Prague. Applicants must attend the exams in person. They may bring an interpreter.

The exams consist of the following parts:

1.   A written test in history and theory of film, fine arts, literature, drama, and music.

2.   Drawing a storyboard based on a given short story. The evaluation is not based on the ability to draw but rather the ability to narrate in images (no dialogue is allowed) and to come up with an original approach.

3.   A written analysis of a film screened for the applicant. The analysis should focus on the means of expression, especially in terms of dramaturgy, editing and sound design.

4.   AN INTERVIEW CLARIFYING THE ABOVE.

Based on the results, commission will choose the applicants to be invited to the third round of the entrance exams.

Entrance Examination: third round

will take place at the editing department of FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Prague. Applicants must attend the exams in person. They may bring an interpreter.

The exams consist of the oral test aimed at knowledge and talent of the applicant.

 Master Program

Entrance Examination

The applicant shall present:

  1. at least two films (ideally one documentary and one fiction), which demonstrate applicant’s creative abilities as a film editor

  1.  an essay on film theory (10-30pages)

  1. a proposal for master study that includes:

a/ a thesis subject (film theory)

b/ a proposal for a creative project that the applicant wants to implement within the  time of study (film, TV, new media)

c/ a list of complementary lectures or seminars that the applicant would like to attend (in addition to the compulsory ones) which relates to the theme of his thesis and project

d/ ideas for pursuing additional forms of study, such as a short term fellowship at a foreign school or a Czech school other than FAMU, participation in a research project, etc.

 All written works must be translated into Czech.

DEADLINES

   Application form and a proposal shall be sent to the address: Studijni oddeleni, FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Praha 1, 116 65. The deadline is May 31.

  The films and the essay shall be sent or brought in person to the address:  KSS (editing department) FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2, Praha 1, 116 65. The deadline is August 31.
