Special Productions - advanced production course

FAMU INTERNATIONAL: SPECIAL PRODUCTIONS

During a three-month period (September-December), selected and highly qualified applicants create film or video project within FAMU International’s Special Productions Program.

Preference is given to applicants who have already successfully completed coursework at FAMU, but all students with appropriate educational or professional experience are encouraged to apply.

The aim of this program is for advanced film makers to complete a film or video project suitable for festival and/or professional presentation.

To this end, Special Productions participants work with an individual project supervisor as well as with various mentors from the FAMU faculty. All projects are produced under the auspices of the FAMU Studio, and include the involvement of a Production Manager provided by FAMU International. Depending on the needs of the student and the project a skilled Director of Photography, Sound Engineer and Editor are also available to assist or collaborate on the project.

The budget of the project is included within the course fee.

Program participants apply directly for the project of their choice:

Short Narrative Film Production (16mm film)

Participants write and direct a 16mm film 7 to 12 minutes in length. Sync sound; on location. Emphasis is on creating a narrative work utilizing elements of film language.

Television Drama Production

Participants write and direct a 20 to 25 minute television drama, shot on HD multi-camera television sound stage.  Emphasis is on creating a good story, well-told, that is dependent on strong writing and work with actors.

35mm Cinematography Production

Emerging cinematographers create a 3 to 5 minute showcase film to demonstrate their visual abilities with a 35mm, non-sync sound production that they also write and direct.

Animation Production

Occasionally, the program produces short animation projects depending on the proposals of highly talented student animators.  Skilled animation assistants, as well as an animation studio, are available for these productions. Final length is maximum 5 minutes.

Academic Dimension:

The program is entirely aimed at the production of a completed project.  All participants meet regularly with supervisors and mentors, but do not attend any classes.

However, participants earn 9 academic credits upon successfully completing their project. The final project will be assessed by a committee of FAMU faculty members.

Additionally, participants may choose to enroll in up to 6 credits worth of classes from the offerings at FAMU International Academy Program – but are not required to do so.

Participants may also choose to attend FAMU Master Classes and Guest lectures.
