The Yale Summer Film Institute at FAMU – Program Information 2010-02-11
Course Description:
An intensive, hands-on exploration of film history, theory and practice, offered in partnership with FAMU, the national film academy of the Czech Republic. At the core of the workshop is a sequence of exercises and projects that recapitulates the evolution of film language, from its silent beginnings through its post-modern present. Each exercise and project, guided by instructors from FAMU and Yale and supported by topical lectures, workshops and screenings, will advance the student’s understanding of film as art, craft and cultural institution. In the final week of the workshop, the student will draw on this understanding to produce a comprehensive final project. All instruction will be in English. Some previous film study is recommended, but not required. Enrollment limited to 16.

Credit:
Due to the collaborative nature of this program, students will effectively be attending Yale and FAMU simultaneously, and will receive the equivalent of one course credit from each institution. Yale credit will be issued as it is for other Yale Summer Session courses, and FAMU credit will be issued in the form of eight European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits, pre-approved for transfer to Yale and application to the Yale Film Studies major.

Accommodations:
Students will be housed in the hotel owned by FAMU’s parent institution, AMU. Typically used to accommodate visiting lecturers and other special guests of the national performing arts academies, the AMU faculty hotel is located in the heart of Malá Strana, near Prague Castle and just opposite the U.S. Embassy. From this location amid the winding cobble-stoned streets of old Prague, it is easy to walk to the castle, the Old Town Square or FAMU’s headquarters opposite the national theater.
