Technical background
Studio of the Department of Still Photography at FAMU
The studio of Still Photography Department at FAMU was created as a service organization to provide Czech and foreign students with space and equipment to realize their basic school exercises and tasks.
Lažanský palác
Studios
In Lažanský Palace there are 2 studios available. The smaller one is designed for working with still photography such as still life, technical and advertising photography in which no model is needed. The basic equipment for students includes a large-format camera with a set of lenses from wide-angle to telephoto in length, which enable to record pictures both on classical material and the digital back of Sinarback. This allows students to choose the technique that solves particular photographic issue in a better way. Lighting in the studio is fixed on a ceiling rail system, the ends of which are fitted with flash devices of different output with a wide range of fittings such as soft boxes, honeycomb filters, etc. The studio is also equipped with classical lights with diffusion and reflective boards. The large studio is designed for work with a model, the basic equipment includes a medium-format camera with the option of classical or digital ways of photographing. The overall output of flash devices is 9000Wattseconds higher.
Darkrooms
For processing photographed material there are two darkrooms available. Both darkrooms are equipped with Jobo enlarger 4x5“ and middle format enlarger Magnifax 6x9 cm. Colour photographs can be processed here as well. There are a colour enlarger head, colour analyser and ACP machine 502 used for processing 50 cm wide colour photographic paper.

Computer equipment
Digital photos can be manipulated immediately on the computer. Students have 8 PC computers available for classwork and realisation own projects. In the graphical workroom 4 another computers are installed. It is possible to scan both classical materials and films up to size 6x9 cm. Colour picture printing is done on an ink printer Epson 3800 (up to size 42x95cm) The computers have standard applications from companies like Adobe, Macromedia, etc. There are also lectures on digital technologies from digital correction to typography, print preparation, and inclusion in multimedia projects.
Studio
Completely new studio was opened in 2009. This studio is designed for second year students for face and body projects. Studio is equipped with endless background, Mamiya RB 67, lighting is both fixed on a ceilling rail system and on movable tripods. The overall output of flash devices is 8000Wattseconds higher.
Darkrooms
For processing photographed material there are two darkrooms available. Both darkrooms are equipped with enlarger up to format 13x18cm.
Beroun Studio
The studio in Beroun is available for more extensive work. There are also two studios equipped similarly to Lažanský Palace, though they are more spacious. Here students can also use two darkrooms equipped with enlargers for 6x9 cm, 4x5" and 13x18 cm. There are also accommodations which enable the students to spend several days at a time at the facility.
Photographing Outside School
To complete different tasks students can borrow photographic equipment for medium-format and large-format shooting, including appropriate lenses, tripods and other special devices such as horizontal cameras, extreme wide-angle lenses, etc. To meet needs of almost 100 students and fellows, it is necessary to work according to a prepared scheduling and reservation system privided through internet that will ensure a fluent experience for all who work in the Photography Department studio.
